If it ends up being just a cracked ringland, you should be ok with just new pistons and rings, assuming they are of the right size of course. Considering you started with a lower .
The gap is tight from the factory which makes the primary compression ring prone to binding. Binding occurs when the ring heats up and runs out of expansion room. The ring then flexs and puts a point load on the piston ringlands. Given . It does sound like you got some cracked ringlands. They typically don't do much at idle, or even light throttle. They usually only act up when you boost and blast air and fuel .
Question for Those With Ringland Failure
Currently, my vehicle is having an issue exemplifying symptoms of oil consumption, slightly rough idle, low compression in one cylinder (~70 psi in cylinder #2), smoke on start . I did a cold compression test and only hit 63psi on that cylinder. The only way I really knew was from the dyno and the compression test otherwise I wouldn't have known. I did notice that if I had the dipstick out I would get blue smoke coming out which is apparently a common symptom of a cracked ringland. Having said that, I had the Subaru dealership perform a compression test on my vehicle which read out at 120 to 135 psi between the cylinders. He told me that this was still within spec. I later performed my own compression test when changing the spark plugs (almost a year and ~20,000 miles later) and the numbers were about the same. It depends on how bad the ringland really is. Ive done compression tests on cracked ringland cars and the majority of the time they come out reading low on those cylinders. I have however experienced what you are talking about and a leakdown test will show more leakage on the cyl that has a cracked ringland, but its not always excessive.
Possible Ringland Issue
Sometimes minor cracks on a ringland won't show up on a compression test. A leak down test would be preferred to catch the problem as early as possible. Some people show few to no signs of a cracked ringland. Once the cracks open up and the piece loosens, then you'll start to see troubles. With that said, a compression test's numbers dont necessarily spell disaster, it is the spread of the numbers. Yours dont look to bad, both pistons on each side are pretty close. You will know it if a ringland lets go you will have 3 with really good numbers and one like . Cracked ringland on #8 is common, its the cylinder that often gets the hottest due to how the cooling circuit is designed. Detonation damage to the piston or scoring of the liner is also possible. . All they have done is a relative compression test and power balance test. I would want to see actual compression on that cylinder as well as leak . Warm or cold, you'll be able to see if you have a cracked ringland because there will be a huge gap in the numbers. Save Share Like. Try doing a leakdown test. This can point you in the right direction as far as where your compression is going. It is possilble a broken ringland can harm your valves in many different ways. If you could look at the cylinder walls, with either a bore scope or from underneath with the oilpan off, you could see if there is any scoring of the walls. i done a compression test on mine and it was 100,100,60,100 i kn ow cycliner 2 is low and i think its a cracked ringland but i was wondering why the other 3 cylinders are so low too? could the rings be bad in all 4? would replacing . However, in my case, and in many other's I know of, a problem with cylinder 4 is indicative of a cracked ringland on that cylinder. Get a compression/leakdown test done and return with the results. Cylinder 4 is more likely to go because it operates a bit leaner than the other cylinders (or so the rumor goes). Usually when you do a compression test you should look out for a single cylinder with unusually low compression. That's an indication of something not sealing right. . Leakdown test will give you much better indication of a cracked ringland.
. More sharing options. IanB. Posted November 2, 2010. IanB .

There are many people with cracked ringlands who don't even know they are cracked. Very few people notice much more than a slight increase in oil consumption (if they are tracking oil consumption); So unless the piston comes apart, or they do a compression test, they never know. I Both agree, and disagree with you when it comes to tuners. The car is going into toyota in about a week to get diagnosed. What I want to know is, what tests should I get them to perform in order to determine whether or not I have blown the headgasket or a ringland. I would also request a compression test be done as well as do an oil . So, I've always been curious, whenever people give ideas about checking motor health (specifically cracked ringlands) one of the first tests always mentioned is the oil filler cap test. From what I understand, if you open your oil filler cap while the motor is running, smoke coming from there is pretty indicative of having a cracked ringland. It's an EFI tune, everyone says he has timing at 14 in boost but according to my logs I've been boosting at 20 degrees, and that means cracked ring lands. I'll be doing a compression test as soon as I can get my hands on a compression tester, mine's at home and I'm in Raleigh (if anyone local has one I'll rent it for a day or something haha).
From experience, the compression number would be more off than what you have in cylinder 3 to indicate a cracked ring/ringland. Does the car puff smoke at all while you're driving it? I had a minor crack in a ringland and my compression numbers were in the 140's while one cylinder was 90.
I just did a leakdown and compression test an hour ago: 1- 175psi 4% 2- 170psi 26% 3- 175psi 6% 4- 110psi 66% .
